supporting families

strengthening families and empowering parents

SCFSS honours the strength of families and communities, striving to keep children within their homes and connected to their cultural roots through culturally safe, prevention-focused services.

SCFSS walks alongside parents and caregivers, honouring the wisdom of communities, to co-create plans and connect families with the resources and support needed to nourish and preserve their wellbeing.

our approach

SCFSS is deeply rooted in nłeʔkepmx and syilx values, prioritizing prevention and the holistic well-being of children within their families and communities through respectful relationships and collaboration. We honour the wisdom of Elders and traditions, fostering strong connections to cultural practices, and ensuring children, young people, and families receive support and guidance from their families and communities.

CULTURALLY SAFE: Employ best practices in accordance with the nłeʔkepmx and syilx ways of being through applying teachings of culture & language.

RESPECTFUL: Being respectful of culture, language, and ceremony in daily practice with each child, family, and community.

COLLABORATIVE: Collaborating with other community supports and services that reflect the cultural values and beliefs of each child, youth, and family.

STRONG RELATIONSHIPS: Building strong, trusting relationships with community – helping families to embrace their culture and language and thrive.

the pathway of  change

community support

prevention, protection & reunification

Community Navigators are the first point of contact when an inquiry for prevention services is made, guiding connections with respect, understanding, and cultural sensitivity. They facilitate these connections by:

  • Helping families access preventative supports that honour cultural practices.
  • Providing short-term assistance and guidance.
  • Connecting families to our service partners for additional support and resources.
  • Bringing families together with Family Circles Coordinators for collective decision-making and healing.

keeping children in the community

community caregivers

If parents or caregivers need a break to focus on their own healing, our Community Caregivers Team can help.

Caregivers provide a young person with a home until the families can come back together.

Shifting away from the 'foster system' model, our approach focuses on supporting extended family and community members in caring for young people – ensuring family, community and cultural connections remain intact.

bring and keep our children home

providing stabilization, maintenance, and sustainability to reunify

In very rare instances, a call for child protection may lead to the temporary removal of a child from their immediate family. In these situations, our dedicated Protection Team works closely with parents, Elders, and the community to provide support that fosters healing and leads to the reunification of families.

The Team ensures that children remain connected to their cultural roots, surrounded by their loved ones, and supported on their healing journey toward reunification with their families and community.
